Atlas of common Microalgae from Yarlung Tsangpo River. (Yalucángbùjiang chángjiàn wei zao túpu (jing)). 2026. illus. 86 p. gr8vo. Hardcover. - Chinese, with Latin nomenclature.
Atlas of Common Microalgae from the Yarlung Zangbo River* was compiled based on the analysis and identification of a wide array of common microalgae collected during recent surveys of the fishery environment in the Yarlung Zangbo River. The book presents microscopic imagery and detailed descriptions of nearly 100 species of common microalgae—spanning 33 genera across three phyla: Bacillariophyta (diatoms), Chlorophyta (green algae), and Cyanophyta (cyanobacteria)—and includes a list of references. Microalgae play a vital role in energy flow, nutrient cycling, and information transfer within aquatic ecosystems. Their species composition, community structure, and abundance directly influence water quality, the flow of energy and matter, and the dynamics of biological resources; consequently, they often serve as bioindicators for the changing state of aquatic environments. In recent years, the rapid economic development of the Tibet Autonomous Region—with towns and cities predominantly established along waterways—has inevitably impacted the Yarlung Zangbo River. The Lhasa River basin, in particular—situated near the urban cluster centered on Lhasa in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo—has become one of the more heavily polluted areas within the river system. Industrial and domestic wastewater have exerted a profound impact on the water environment, which in turn affects the urban landscape and the health of local residents. Eutrophic water bodies can trigger massive algal proliferation, leading to algal blooms; the toxic effects and other adverse impacts of these algae pose a significant threat to the safety of the aquatic environment.
