This is the first volume of a series containing maps of the distribution of bryophitic species in the Iberian Peninsula and islands.Onece finished, this series will be a reference catalogue for visualization of the geographical distribution of the species. Data obtained from review of herbaria will be preferred, but literature data will be acceptable provided their source is reliable. The known locations of each taxon are presented on a map in UTM 1o km.A text describing the ecology, habitaat and other relevant data isi ncluded with the corresponding map. This text is completed with information on places of collection, year, collector, herbarium, sources of data (if used) and list of general references. This first volume constitutes a survey of the different distribution sfound in the studied region. It includes fifty species ordered alphabetically whose distributions represent the following habitats:Atlantic,Mediterranean, Central European, Arctic-Alpine. Worthmentioning austro-boreal endemisms, relics and disjunctions are alsoreported.-From the Introduction: In recent years there has been a remarkable increase in the number of taxonomic and biographic studies carried out in the Iberian Peninsula. Numerous peninsular and insular botanists specializing in bryology and foreign botanists visiting the country have provided new and important data. After the publication of the Check-Listof Spain (CASAS 1981), a complete and up-to-date catalogue seemed necessary. However, we believe that a distribution map for each species could substitute such a catalogue and in fact would even better it as it would give a clearer and more specific idea as to the geographical localization and the extension of the area covered.
