Abstract. A flora treatment for the Compositae tribes Mutisieae, Eupatorieae, Cardueae and Vernonieae occurring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi is provided. In this area, the tribe Mutisieae is represented by 5 genera and 40 species, Eupatorieae by 5 genera and 12 species, Cardueae by 5 genera and 14 species and Vernonieae by 15 genera and 181 species, the
majority in the genus Vernoni a, here treated in its broad sense. Both tribes and genera have user-friendly keys showing how to distinguish the various taxa, while line drawings and photographs for selected taxa are provided to support the identification process. The species come with regional synonymy, full
description, data on distribution, conservation, habitat, vernacular names and uses; representative herbarium specimens are cited for each species.References to additional literature are given.
