It surveys the broad literature, but it isnot merely an update of the earlier book. This new book contains a newintroductory chapter reviewing seaweed morphology, cytology, and lifehistories. The chapter on community level ecology now includes sixguest essays by senior algal ecologists which conveys the excitementof phycological research. The treatment of tropical seaweeds hasbeen expanded, reflecting the growing literature from tropical regionsand the authors' recent experiences in the tropics. The final chapteron mariculture is much larger, and includes a case study on howprinciples of physiological ecology were applied in developing the Irishcarrageenan industry. Finally there is an appendix summarizing thetaxonomic position and nomenclature of the species mentioned in thebook.
