Farsetia, tribus Alysseae, is distributed in arid or semiarid regionsin Africa and West Asia (from Morocco to NW India, and southwards toTanzania). 25 species are recognized, two of which are subdivided intosubspecies. The centre of variation is found in the Horn of Africa andsouth Arabia, where many are narrow or local endemics. Phytogeographicaland evolutionary implications are discussed. The morphological studiesemphasize the taxonomic importance of variation in life form, nectarialarrangements, siliqua septum patterns and stigma structure. Chromosomenumbers are reported for 5 species. Nine new species are described:F. cornus-africani Jonsell, F. dhofarica Jonsell & Miller, F. divaricataJonsell, F. emarginata Jonsell, F. latifolia Jonsell & Miller, F.nummularia Jonsell, F. pedicellata Jonsell, F. spinulosa Jonsell, F.tenuisiliqua Jonsell and two new combinations on subspecific level arepublished viz. F. aegyptia Turra subsp. edgeworthii (Hook. f. & Thomson)Jonsell and F. stenoptera Hochst. subsp. boivinii (Fourn.) Jonsell. Key,descriptions and lists of collections are provided for all taxa. For allspecies illustrations and distribution maps are presented.
