The report is based on the original draft report to the NatureConservancy Council (Rich & Woodruff 1990), updated with correctionsand additional historical data. The BSBI Monitoring Scheme exercise was a sample survey of the distribution of the ferns and seedbearing plants of Britain andIreland, based on surveying one in nine of the 10 km x 10 km squaresof the Ordnance Survey National Grid of each country. Within each selected 10 km x 10 km square, survey was concentrated on three2 km x 2 km squares. The main aim of the exercise was to providea baseline for monitoring changes in the future. A secondary aim wasto compare, as far as possible, the situation in 1987/88 with that up to 1960, represented in the Atlas of the British flora (Perring &Walters 1962).
