More than 2600 specimens of Anthostomella from 35 herbaria have been examined, including the types of most described taxa and representatives of similar genera. Eighty-six species of A. are accepted including 5 new species, while ninety-five species are synonymized. Key to the accepted species of A. and a synoptic diagram of these species.Descriptions and illustrations for all accepted species are provided.One hundred and five species have been excluded and placed in other genera. These are listed with notes. Sixty-five species are regarded as doubtful. Nineteen genera are regarded as similar to A., which are described and illustrated.
