The biology of the aquatic fungus Allomyces (Phycomycetes,Blastocladiales) is reviewed from a variety of points of view (lifecycle variation, morphogenesis, cytology, physiology and genetics) anddiscussed in relation to what is known from related organisms (Blastocladiella, Physoderma, Catenaria, and Coelomomyces). The latterportion of the review describes various techniques which have beendeveloped for studying Allomyces, including techniques for thesynchronization of spore formation and encystment, nuclear staining,electron microscopy, and the isolation of auxotrophic or sexual mutants.
