Yunnan Bamboo Flora introduces the abundant resources of bamboo species in Yunnan, and provides comprehensive review of the research advancements to date. The first works on the taxonomic classification of bamboo species based on the modern scientific classification system was the Illustrated Flora of China. the Gramineae compiled by Professor Geng Yili (editor in chief)in 1955, in which 20 genera, 71 bamboo species (including varieties and genotypes)were recorded. Among them, 12 species of 7 genera were first described in Yunnan. In 1996, Book One of the Ninth Volume (the Bambusoideae)of the Flora Repubulicae Popularis Sinicae (Flora of China) recorded over 500 bamboo species of 37 genera in China. The last of the two volumes of the Illustrated Trees of Yunnan published in 1997 recorded a total of 200 bamboo species of 25 genera in Yunnan. In 2003, the Ninth Volume (the spermatophyte) of Flora Yunnanica (Flora of Yunnan)recorded 188 bamboo species of 26 genera in Yunnan. This book, Yunna Bamboo Flora has in total recorded 282 bamboo species, varieties and genotypes of 39 genera in Yunnan. Bamboo species were widely distributed across Yunnan. In particular the highest richness of bamboo species are found in the southwest, south, southeast northwest and northeast regions of Yunnan. From the tropical areas of south Yunnan to the alpine areas of northwest Yunnan, they encompass a broad range of bamboo types(e.g. the large tropical sympodial bamboo, the temporal scattered bamboo, the alpine cold temperate mixed bamboo, and other ecological types)and life-forms(e.g. arbor, shrub, herb, climbing, vine-like, and even epiphytic). Amazingly, Yunnan has about half of the known bamboo genera and species in China, Its bamboo diversity has no rival in China and the rest of the world. There are many ancient bamboo species and genera in Yunnan, for example, Yunnan along has 14 out of the 17 ancient bamboo genera in the world. In particular, a piece of bamboo fossil was excavated in Longling County in Southwest Yunnan in 2003.
