This book is a compilation of most of the seminars presented during asymposium held in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The introduction treats notonly the Netherlands as wetland in a larger landscape but also thevarious wetland types within the country itself. The subsequent casestudies concern representative wetland types. Both introduction and casestudies give an historical, hydrological, physiochemical and bioticcharacterization of the wetland concerned as well as a description ofmanagement measures in the past and in the present; summarize thethreats to the systems, and indicate prospects for the ecosystems, giventhe present environmental conditions and expectations for short and longterm changes. In the introduction special attention is paid to theborder-crossing biotic elements, such as birds. These sections arefollowed by a summary of the ecology of the Netherlands wetlands andindications for future ecological research. Finally, the environmentalpolicy and its consequences for management on a national, regional andlocal scale are discussed.
