Summary: Sphagna or simply peat-mosses (Sphagnophyta) represent a peculiar group of bryophytes (Bryobiotina) in the plant kingdom. They have unique biology i.e. anatomy, morphology, physiology and ecology. They have over 250 species world-wide, within a single genus Sphagnum. The centers of their diversity and biomass are in boreal and polar zonobiomes.
In Europe, the flora of peat-mosses counts 50 species, and all of them are listed in annex IV of Bern Convention and EU Habitat Directive as a species of special and threated habitats - peat bogs, mires and other sphagna wetlands in general.
In Serbia, 25 species of peat-mosses were recorded up to date, out of 35 species known in SE Europe or 39 species known to grow in peri-Mediterranean area, which in fact give an idea on the high sphagna diversity represented in Serbia.
Even though, bryophytes represent the second largest group of terrestrial plants (just after angiosperms), the knowledge on the bryophyte flora and bryophyte biology in Serbia is comparably less to that of tracheophytes.
This unique flora monograph of sphagna of Serbia and in Serbian language in Cyrillic script, is the first in a series of Serbian bryophyte floras.
It includes keys, species description, Serbian trivial names for each species, potential misidentification candidates, detailed distribution maps as well as all the records both literature and herbarium made up to date in Serbia.
