In this study 147 desmid taxa, comprising 15 genera, from the Lower River Uruguay Basin (Argentina) are described. Each one of the registered taxa is illustrated and its geographical distribution is given as well as the physical and chemical parameters of the sampling sites (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, total solids,total phosphorus and nitrogen). After the floristic survey an ecologicalanlys is is presented making reference to the environmental requirements,the species richness and the abundance of these algae. The influence of the abiotic factors is analyzed by means of correlations and by the study of the ecological tolerance ranges. A cluster analysis is carried out among all the desmid species revealing no definite algal associations.
