From the introduction:This report includes collections made during 1975and 1976 on six float trips down the Colorado River from Lee's Ferry toDiamond Creek.A total of 27 major sites and tributaries were sampledseasonally as well as the main Colorado River and numerous canyon wallseeps.This report on the Grand Canyon includes descriptions of 235 taxarepresenting 42 genera of diatoms.Also included by name are other taxathat are known to occur in Arizona as reported by various authors(Hostetter,1968;Olsen and Sommerfeld,1970;Button and Blinn,1973;Johnsonet al.,1975;Sommerfeld et.al.,1975;Czarnecki and Blinn,1977)which havenot as yet been reported from the Grand Canyon system.The indextherefore ,is thought to be an up-to-date diatom flora list of Arizona,USA.The report also includes a brief glossary of routinely employedecological and morphological terms,illustrated where appropriate.Ultimate taxa observed in this study may be identified with the aid ofthe ordinal,familial,generic and ultimate keys.In addition,directlybelow each described taxonomic entry there is an appropriate publishedreference,which in most cases was employed for the determination of thattaxon.
