The Tomato Crop. A Scien- tific Basis for Improvement. 1986. illustr. tabs. XV,661 p. gr8vo. Cloth.

Production of tomato fruit is commercially important throughout theworld for both the fresh market and the processed food industry. Thecrop is grown in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate areas using manydiverse production systems. It is grown in warmer areas entirely in theopen field, but in cooler regions greenhouses are required to provide atemperature lift early in the season. In Northern Europe and parts ofNorth America, sophisticated glasshouses equipped with artificialheating and elaborate environmental controls are employed throughout thelife of the crop. Advanced technology is generally used far moreextensively than with agricultural crops. Much of the information onfield, greenhouse and glasshouse tomatoes has previously been consideredseparately and the more fundamental research findings have often failedto reach the grower, extension services and industry. This book presentsa critical review of research and development findings integrated fromthese areas of tomato investigation. Ideas for research and a scientificbasis for further improvements to the crop are provided throughout.
