The early botanical collections from the icy Antarctic andSub-Antarctic waters were mainly made by European investigators.Consequently, most authentic algal specimens are shown in EuropeanHerbaria. Therefore, non-European investigators cannot easily consultthese taxonomically most valuable algae. The author of this volume,himself partaker of three South Polar expeditions, visited European Herbaria and took photographs of the preserved authentic algae includingthe original labels.
