This work sets out the most significant scientific, educational and institutional developments that took place at the Madrid Botanical Garden. Academics and researchers who shaped the course of its thankless history throughout the reign of King Ferdinand, a period in which the ineptitude of politicians and rulers during the first third of the 19th century meant that the fate of this institution - as well as that of science in general - was marked by hardship and favouritism, which brought them to the brink of extinction.
