Traditional indigenous systems of medicine are a part of the rich andvast Indian heritage. Handed down through the centuries, they embody thesummun boun of knowledge regarding diseases and their cures; a completepharmacopoeia giving substances and drug preparations and they alsoinclude the properties of each substance and its uses. Earlier on, withthe practice of Ayurveda falling into untutored and unprincipled hands, the denigration of the whole system was a natural corollary. Ayurvedahas at long last come into its own and has gained wide recognition notonly in the country of its origin; its echoes have come from the distantshores of the new world. This encyclopaedic work has been prepared onthe basis of the 8th, 12th and 90th to 97th chapters (a total of tenchapters) of Todarmalla's monumental work on Ayurveda, called AyurvedaSaukhyam.
