Diatoms of Low - Alkalinity Lakes in the Northeastern United States. 2000. (Ac. Nat. Sc. Philadelphia, Spec. Publ. 18). 37 plates. 152 p. Hardcover.
Contains photomicrographs and ecological data for diatom taxa foundin sediment samples collected from 166 lakes in Adirondack Park, northern New York. Because many of these diatom taxa are relativelywidespread, however, the taxonomic and ecological information isapplicable to low - alkalinity lakes throughout the northeasternUnited States and southeastern Canada. There are 37 plates with 887light and 12 SEM photographs depicting 292 of the 405 taxa found in thesamples. Thirteen taxa are described as new in addition to one newcombination. Tables present data on lake location, morphometry, andwater chemistry characteristics. In addition, for the 207 taxa whichoccurred in samples from five or more lakes, ecological optima andtolerance are presented for pH, acid neutralizing capacity, totalaluminium, dissolved organic carbon, and total phosphorus. Providesalso taxonomic guidance and ecological data for future studies of low-alkalinity lakes.
