The general part of this catalogue contains a survey of the bryological exploration of Austria, from its beginning in the 18th century up to the present. Notes on habitat conditions and distribution patterns of mosses in Austria follow. The special part opens with general remarks. Then it documents the 758 species of mosses reported so far for Austria with their scientific names and important synonyms, habitat preferences, ecology and distribution, critical notes on variability and taxonomic differentiation as well as literature references within the framework of genera and families. For selected species colour plates are included and distribution patterns in Austria are shown in grid maps.
