This volume contains thirty-two of the papers presented at a jointmeeting of the Ecological Affairs Committee of the British EcologicalSociety and the Nature Conservancy Council which was held in Edinburgh1987. Although there has been long-standing interest in the uplands ofBritain, this meeting was planned during a time of mounting interest in,and concern for, the British upland scene. The organizers aimed to linktogether as many facets of pure and applied ecology as was possiblewithin the time constraint of the meeting, and this resultant SpecialPublication of the British Ecological Society reviews the changes thathave taken and are taking place in the uplands environment andparticular attention is paid to aspects of forestry, agriculture,recreation, acid pollution and wilflife conservation.
