An attempt has been made here to gather some aspects of information ona very fascinating subject, the ecology and plant life in the westernIndian desert. A considerable part of this desert is comprised of sanddunes and saline sandy plains, where survival of plants is a realproblem mainly due to physical absence of water. In the present book thehabitat, climate and vegetation of the desert have been dealt in threesections. Section I deals with desert environment where arid zoneclimate, its bearing on vegetation and microbiology of desert soil havebeen dealt. Section II deals with desert plants, where adaptationalcharacteristics, seed and seed germination behaviour, plant productionunder water limiting conditions, and grassland management have beendiscussed. Section III deals with desert crops where details are givenon desert horticulture, crops and cropping patterns, efficientconservation of rainfall for aridland agriculture, and crops and weedmanagement.
