Publication of volume 1 of the Flora de Chile marks the beginning ofan important new South American flora. Chile is home to an estimated5100 native species of plants, about half endemics. The FLORA DE CHILEcombines previous information with new data developed during the courseof the project, presenting it in a format of use to botanists,ecologists, conservationists, agronomists, foresters, and naturalists.The series is designed to make identification easy: keys to allfamilies, genera and species are provided. There are original figuresshowing diagnostic characters for most species. Distribution maps foreach species. Each species entry contains its name (basionym andsynonyms), original bibliographic references, description, habitat,common name, endemism, months of flowering and fruiting, geographicand altitudinal ranges, presence in other countries,etc. Index toscientific and common names. Volume 1 treats 165 species of pteridophytes and 18 species of gymnosperms.
