This work includes the 662 medicinal plants of the Balearic Islands that have been referenced in the scientific literature. The synonyms and popular names, botanical description, habitat, chemical composition, parts used, pharmacological action, therapeutic use and comparison in the Aiurvedic, Tibetan, Xindian, Philippine, Moroccan, Mexican and homeopathic pharmacopoeias are analysed for each one of them. Studies on medicinal flora from the time of the Greek and Latin classics -Hippocrates, Theophrast, Galè, Dioscorides, Pliny-, Arabs -Ibn Sina-, and Balearic medicinal flora have been analysed, medieval and modern up to the 21st century - from Ramon Llull to Brotat et Terrers, Cursach i Arguimbau, Barceló i Combis, Bianor, Palau i Ferrer, Bonafè i Barceló, etc. The presence of these species in popular literature and culture has also been collected - the plants of Mallorcan rondalles and Ramon Llull have made up two books published separately.
The rich popular lexicon includes 3,626 names and 3,027 glosses and sayings in Catalan that refer to the 662 medicinal plants studied. The graphic part corresponds to the photographs of the Virtual Herbarium of the Western Mediterranean of the UIB and the collection of aquarelles, by the artists Irene Mulet and Judit Morales.
