Badagongshan Nature Reserve is located in Sangzhi County, which is near the border of Hunan and Hubei provinces. The northern part of the reserve is linked to the mountains of western Hubei, and the southern part of the reserve is linked to the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.

This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)

Flora of Badagongshan National Nature Reserve in Hunan Province (3 Volumes set) records 2786 species and 200 varieties (subspecies) of vascular plants in the Badagongshan National Nature Reserve, belonging to 200 families and 1020 genera. Among them, there are 356 species of lycophytes and ferns belonging to 29 families and 89 genera, 25 species of gymnosperms belonging to 4 families and 19 genera, and 2405 species of angiosperms belonging to 167 families and 912 genera. It is published in three volumes. Volume 1 contains lycophytes and ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms from Schisandraceae to Lardizabalaceae, totaling 75 families, 330 genera and 928 species. Volume 2 contains angiosperms from Menispermaceae to Santalaceae, totaling 65 families, 323 genera and 928 species. Volume 3 contains angiosperms from Apiaceae to Umbelliferae, totaling 60 families, 367 genera and 930 species.

The classification system used is as follows: ferns are classified according to the PPPG system; gymnosperms according to the Christenhusz (2011) system; and angiosperms according to the APG IV (2016) system. The order of genera and species is based on ease of application and does not reflect the evolutionary order within families or the authors' academic viewpoints.

The descriptions of plant species include their Chinese and Latin names, identifying characteristics, flowering and fruiting periods, growing environments, and uses. For non-monotypic and non-family/genus entries, there are keys to the genus and species. Most of the images are original photographs; for the few images taken by non-authors, the photographer or source is indicated.
