FRIM: The Untold Story. 2019. (FRIM Special Publ.,28). illus. 98 p. Paper bd.

The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) was a truly heavenly place to live. Located some seven kilometers from the centre of Kuala Lumpur amidst a forested environment, it is green, serene, full of trees, quiet and no traffic jams! I loved living there. I spent my whole career in the Forest Research Institute Kepong and later FRIM, from 1965 to 1995, except for the years that I went to study overseas (13 months in the Netherlands and four years in Michigan. USA). We were so near to Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, but we were in a haven of our own. Being a forest environment and a green lung of the Klang Valley, it has its biodiversity of trees, insects, reptiles, and small animals. The weather was so much cooler than outside with temperatures at night going around the low 20 degrees Centigrade. The staff of FRIM should also consider themselves as privileged as they do not have to suffer the long crawling traffic jams of commuters working in Kuala Lumpur, besides working in a lush, green and quiet community. They can enjoy the facilities of Kuala Lumpur as it is a 20-minute drive during normal traffic condition.
My 30 years in FRIM gave me everlasting memories, but the following were genuinely memorable anecdotes that I wish to record. Some of the times in FRI and FRIM were recorded in two previous publications, my autobiography "Portrait of a Thousand Smiles" and a booklet on the occasion of FRIM 251 Anniversary entitled "A Journey Down Memory Laie: My Times in FRIM". However, the following anecdotes had not been published before.

I hope that this publication will help kindle memories amongst those mentioned in the book and bring a smile to their faces! It has been a long 23 years since I retired from FRIM, but the memories are still fresh. May Allah bless all those who helped me develop FRIM to become the top tropical forestry institute in the world. (Salleh Mohd. Nor, former Director of Forest Research Institute of Malaysia).
