This account is based primarily on the unpublished MSS of the family which was to be included by Dr. John Hutchinsonin Volume 3 of his 'The Genera of Flowering Plants', only the first two volumes of which were published at the time of his death in 1972. Whereas his generic descriptions were largely drawn upon for this present account, his system of classification has not been followed. It was superseded by the system of Grady L. Webster (TAXON, 1975), and subsequently extended and considerably revised by the time the much fuller treatment of that system appeared in the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden in 1994.
