Aquatic herbaceous plants are a key plant group in the Amazon floodplains. Although they occur in bodies of water in the region, given their intense growth, they substantially increase the carbon and nutrient stocks of these environments.
These plants are also important as a shelter and source of food for many aquatic organisms, especially fish.
This guide summarizes information on the aquatic herbaceous plants that occur most frequently in the Amazon floodplains.
It covers a total of 104 species from 76 genera and 37 families. The book has been organized to enable identify the species in the field, learn about their morphology and ecology, and can be of use to both academia as well as to the general public interested in aesthetic, recreational or beautification aspects of this fascinating plant group. We mainly used
Photos of the plants in their environment and morphological details relevant to identification. At the end of the description of each species, its life cycle is presented in relation to the hydrological cycle, allowing us to know the phase of the year with the greatest most likely to find it.
