The Ebro Depression, as defined in this guide, is the arid, low-lying area centered on the middle section of the Ebro River, sheltered from the rains of the Pyrenees and surrounded by the Pre-Pyrenees to the north, the Iberian System to the west and south, and the Catalan Coastal Range to the east. It stretches from Tudela (Navarre) to Lleida and from Monzón (Huesca) to Alcañiz (Teruel). In this territory, the kermes oak only grows in a few north-facing shelters. Rainfall is very scarce, in many places below 400 mm/year, and fog is persistent in winter. The prevailing northwest wind (cierzo) is trapped in the valley and often reaches very high speeds, drying out plants that are not true specialists in this type of habitat.
