This is the first of a planned four volumes, entirely devoted to gynostemial morphology and, to a lesser extent, anatomy of Orchidales. The second volume, which is under preparation, will focus on the family Epidendroideae, while the third and fourth volumes will treat the subfamily Vandoideae, the largest and perhaps taxonomically most difficult group.
