From the Preface: Though only five years have elapsed since thepublication of the first edition of this flora we have had to makeappreciable changes in producing a second edition necessitatingalterations on nearly every page. This is due mainly to the considerableamount of recent published work (the bibliography is increased by almost15%) which has revealed relationships among marine algae that havealtered current thinking on the classification of orders and families, and has also given rise to transfers and to name changes in genera andspecies. In addition, there has been much new information about theecology and distribution of certain taxa due especially to a number ofrecent sublittoral studies. We have attempted to bring into thisrevision all the new data available though have decided not tooverburden the text by including secondary citation of records ingraduate theses (e.g. Sanusi, 1980) or in the most recently publishedpart of the "Seaweeds of the Western Coast of Tropical Africa andAdjacent Islands: a Critical Assessment" (Price, John & Lawson, 1986).The illustrations remain much as they were in the first edition apartfrom a few additions and some amendments to the originals.
