Herbals. Their Origin and Evolution. 2nd ed. 1938. (Re - issue 1953, Reprint 2010). 159 figs. 410 p. gr8vo. Paper bd.
Herbals deal primarily with medicinal and culinary herbs, their realand supposed properties and virtues, and in origin they go back at leastto the Ancient Greeks. During the 16th and 17th centuries they developedinto attractively illustrated printed books, the forerunners of modernbotanical and pharmaceutical textbooks. Agnes Arber's Herbals (firstpublished in 1912, much revised in 1938) stands as the major survey ofthe period 1470 to 1670 when botany evolved into a scientific disciplineseparate from herbalism, a development reflection in contemporaryherbals. Every work on herbals since 1912 has been indebted to Arber'sclassic.
