Most important among Ivan M. Johnston's publications are his over50 articles which deal with his favourite family; the Boraginaceae. Ina series 'Studies in the Boraginaceae', comprising 31 papers, hepublished not only new taxa, but thouroughly discussed the synonymshe accepted or rejected, and the herbarium specimens he revised. These'Studies' are still the basis of every systematic treatment ofBoraginaceae. Unfortunately, Johnston never compiled an index of thetaxa he mentioned in these papers totalling about 1,600 printed pages.Furthermore, in the course of studying the taxa his knowledgeincreased, thus leading him often to alter his opinion about theacceptance and cuircumscription of taxa. So, if one wants to see ifJohnston ever mentioned a taxon, one has to review all of his works.This publication is to remedy this situation by indexing theestimated 4,700 taxa and by indicating the validity he assigned to them.Approximately 15,000 original entries were combined to produce11,200 revised entries.
