Since mankind's earliest beginnings plants have played a central rolein the cultural development of peoples. Texts on plants by Theophrasus,Dioscorides, Virgil, Ovid and Pliny the Elder, among others, have comedown to us, their survival demonstrating their outstanding importanceas documents for botanical and medical research.
