The idea of photographing and indexing the vascular plant types at theNew York Botanical Garden began at a library preservation conference inMay 1981 when Anthony Abbott of Microform Review (Meckler Publishing)expressed interest to Charles R.Long, Director of our Library, in the use of microfiche to publish works of reference. Mr. Long suggested thepossibility of recording and distributing the Garden's vascular planttype collection on microfiche. Subsequently Alan Meckler, President ofMeckler Publishing, and Patricia Holmgren, Director of the Herbarium atthe New York Botanical Garden, pursued the topic. In June 1982 the Garden signed an agreement under the terms of which Meckler Publishingassumed financial responsibility for photographing the types, publishingthe Index, and marketing the product, while the Garden undertook to recall outstanding loans of types, supervise the photography, prepareand proofread the Index, and annotate the Index with microfiche locationof each specimen.
