The present study, founded on herbarium material, is thefirst comprehensive treatment of Sterigmostemum. Descriptions of thegenus and its seven recognized species are presented; a key for theiridentification is provided and their distribution illustrated by dotmaps. All names, synonyms included, have been typified. Ecological andchorological characteristics of the genus and its subordinate taxa arediscussed. Chromosome numbers have been recorded from the literature. Anhistorical outline introduces the general part which deals with thegenerical definition and with the relationship of Sterigmostemum andallies within the tribes Hesperideae and Matthioleae, and accordinglywith the systematics of these two tribes.
