The Phylogeny and Classification of the Ferns. 1973. (Supplement No. 1 to the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, Volume 67, 1973). Reprint 1984. illustrated. XIV,284 p. gr8vo. Bound. (ISBN 978-3-87429-218-4)
The book is based on a symposium on The Phylogeny and Classification ofthe Filicopsida held jointly by the British Pteridological Society and the Linnean Society of London in April 1972. The aim of the symposiumwas to bring together scientists of various disciplines whose researchcould be employed to simplify various fern phylogenies. The publicationis not, however, merely an account of the symposium, but has beenenlarged, especially in the bibliographies, to form a reference book tothe cytology, anatomy, palynology, chemistry and gametophyte studiesin the Filicopsida. - Contents: Foreword/ List of contributors/ Preface/Symposium programme/ Holttum, R.E., Posing the problems/ Pichi Sermolli,R.E.G., An historical review of the higher classification of theFilicopsida/ Harris, T.M., What use are fossil ferns?/ Bierhorst, D.W.,Non-appendicular fronds in the Filicopsida/ Van Cotthem, W.R.J.,Stomatal types and systematics/ Atkinson, Lenette R., The gametophyteand family relationships/ Walker, T.G., Evidence from cytology in theclassification of ferns/ Swain, T. & Cooper-Driver, Gillian: Biochemicalsystematics in the Filicopsida/ Mickel, J.T., Position of andclassification within the Dennstaedtiaceae/ Tryon, R.M. jr. & Tryon,Alice F., Geography, spores and evolutionary relationships in thecheilanthoid ferns/ Sen, U. & Sen, Tuhinsri: Anatomical relationshipsbetween the Oleandra and Nephrolepis groups/ Holttum, R.E., Classification of the Thelypteridaceae/ Wood, C.C., Spore morphology inthe Thelypteridaceae/ Sledge, W.A., Generic and family boundaries in theAspidiaceae and Athyriaceae/ Lovis, J.D., A biosystematic approach tophylogenetic problems of the Polypodiaceae/ Wagner, W.H. jr., Somefuture challenges of fern systematics and phylogeny/ Manton, Irene,Closing address/ Group photograph and key/ Index.
