This list of species of green, brown and red seaweeds from New Zealand's five subantarctic island groups - the Bounties, the Snares,the Antipodes, the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island - is based onPapenfuss's "Catalogue and Bibliography of Antarctic and SubantarcticMarine Algae" (Papenfuss, 1964) and updates that publication withrespect to the subantarctic region of New Zealand. Representativeherbarium specimens are listed for each species. At least 225 specieshave been recorded from one or more of the five island groups. Of these,approximately 15% are Chlorophyta, 20% Phaeophyta and 65% Rhodophyta.The Cyanophyta are not included. The history of marine botany within theregion is described.
