Planktonic marine cyanobacteria are abundant and significant in thebiogeochemistry of the sea. This volume focuses on the filamentouscyanobacteria, particularly those in the genus Trichodesmium which arecommon in tropical and subtropical seas. A portion of this book alsoconcerns bloom-forming cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea area. Filamentouscyanobacteria are important as primary producers and for the fixation ofatmospheric nitrogen and thus are significant in global cycling of bothof these elements. In recent years, through the application of newtechniques and intensive multi-disciplinary research programs, progresshas been made in understanding both the biology of these cyanobacteriaand their place in the marine food web.
