As new. -The present volume treats 44 families with 264 genera, 3830 species(of which 1061 are "segregate species" and 223 are considered asdoubtful) and 881 additional subspecies (202 of them questionable). Thisgives a total of 4711 taxa of specific or subspecific rank (425doubtfully distinct). The number of lines of distributional records is5273, since such records are also provided for the 248 aggregates and314 "type-subspecies". The number of the listed synonyms (not includingthe 639 entries of misapplied names) is 5572, so that no less than 10283names of which the authorship and nomenclatural status had to beverified appear in this book.
