Summary: In the present monograph 43 species of Aponogeton arerecognized (none of which new to science), and the occurrence of aprobably undescribed species in Zaire is indicated. Detailed descriptions of all species are given and an artificial key to thespecies is provided. Parts of flowers and fruits are depicted in detail, and photographs of some species are added. Distribution maps of allspecies have been prepared. Attention has also been paid to morphology, habitat and life-cycle, pests, the importance of cultivation, hybrids, infrageneric groupings, unidentified specimens and doubtful names. Idid not succeed in finding a satisfactory grouping of the genus, probably because Aponogeton is typically a genus with reticulaterelationships.
