Contributions in Serbo - Croatian and English.
Beech, with its broad ecological valence, adapts easily to climatic and pedological conditions. Thus, it occurs in some ten forest communities extending from the micro- elevations of Posavina and Podravina to the upper forest boundary in the Croatian Dinaric chain, It does not appear in flood-plain areas and in the Mediterranean Adriatic belt.
From the aspect of biological and economic quality of forest in Croatia, beech plays an indispensable role in maintaining the natural condition and quality of stands, which have been professionally sustained for over 200 years in the treatments of natural regeneration and sustainable development based on the principles of the renowned Zagreb School of Silviculture. Its share in the Croatian forest fund has great importance for the maintenance of high biological diversity and for the general and commercial role of the forest as a whole. In terms of new forest damage, common beech is a species with a damage status of less than 10 %.
The monograph analyses the beech from all aspects of forestry disciplines, including the taxonomy, distribution range, ecology and biology of the species, vegetation, nature protection, breeding, silviculture, management, protection and use of forests, incorporating all the knowledge already gained on this tree species.
