Farallones de Cali is a cluster of mountains in the West Andes of Colombia. It is located west of the city of Cali and gives rise to many of the rivers that provide water and electricity to Cali. The Farallones de Cali encompasses 150,000 ha (580 sq mi) in the mountains as well as much of the Pacific slope and is an area of very high biodiversity.

This book is the result of five years of botanical research documenting native orchids at the National Natural Park Farallones de Cali and its surrounding areas. This protected area, which covers 196,430 hectares of the municipalities of Buenaventura, Cali, Dagua and Jamundí, is of great importance due to its biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides to the city of Cali and the Colombian Pacific region. The book presents general information about the National Natural Park, highlights the importance of the orchids and its conservation, describes the genera present in the area, illustrates 310 species with photographic plates and relevant information, and finally, provides an annotated list of all the species found in the park so far, which allows to appreciate the diversity of the family.

During the botanical explorations, we recorded 430 species of orchids, grouped into 100 genera, which represent nearly 10% of the total species richness of orchids in Colombia. Of the 430 species, 106 are endemic to Colombia, 36 are restricted to Valle del Cauca, and 17 have only been recorded in the National Natural Park Farallones. Among the 16 species only recorded in the Park, 16 are new to science: nine Lepanthes, three Pleurothallis, two Epidendrum, one Masdevallia and one Cyrtochilum. In addition, 25 species are new records for the Colombian flora, and six species are under the IUCN categories: four vulnerables (VU) and two near threatened (NT).

Este libro es resultado del trabajo botánico realizado durante cerca de cinco años documentando las orquídeas que crecen naturalmente en el Parque Nacional Natural Farallones de Cali y su área de influencia. Esta área protegida, que abarca 196.430 hectáreas de los municipios de Buenaventura, Cali, Dagua y Jamundí, es de gran importancia por su biodiversidad y por generar bienes y servicios ambientales para la ciudad de Cali y la región del Pacífico colombiano.

El libro presenta generalidades del Parque Nacional Natural, destaca la importancia de las orquídeas y de su conservación, describe brevemente los géneros encontrados, ilustra, mediante láminas fotográficas con información relevante, 310 especies, y, finalmente, entrega una lista anotada de todas las especies encontradas en el Parque que permite apreciar la diversidad de la familia. Durante esta investigación se registraron 430 especies de orquídeas, distribuidas en 100 géneros, lo que constituye cerca del 10 % de las especies registradas para Colombia. De estas 430 especies, 106 son endémicas de Colombia, 36 solo se encuentran en el Valle del Cauca y 17 sólo se han registrado en el Parque Nacional Natural Farallones de Cali. De estas últimas, 16, son especies nuevas para la ciencia y pertenecen a los siguientes géneros: nueve Lepanthes, tres Pleurothallis, dos Epidendrum, una Masdevallia y un Cyrtochilum. Además, 25 especies son registros nuevos para Colombia y seis especies están bajo alguna categoría de amenaza de la UICN: cuatro vulnerables (VU) y dos casi amenazadas (NT).
