This study is a synopsis of the genus Ocotea in the circumscription ofKostermans (1957a), i. e. including Nectandra and Pleurothyrium. Thelast revision of this group dates back to 1889, when MEZ published his "Lauraceae Americanae". Since then, hundreds of new species have been published so that the group became unmanageable. This study is intended to make some order out of the chaos by proposing subdivision into smaller entities, which later can be treated monographically. More than 1700 published names had to be evaluated, and for almost allof them type specimens have been examined.
