The eleven papers presented in this issue of the New Zealand Journal ofBotany arose from a symposium on Research on the Vegetation of NewZealandheld to mark the retirement of Dr.Eric John Godley from Botany Division,DSIR.The Symposium venue was the Ellesmere Country Club,Lincoln,Canterbury,on 1 to 2 May 1984.The intention of the symposium was toreview botanical research on the Vegetation of New Zealand undertaken to the present with the purpose of considering priority areas of research in the future.To this end eight sessions were defined,under the headings:Biosystematics of higher plants of New Zealand.Biosystematics of the cryptogamic flora of New Zealand.Structural component of the form and function of New Zealand plants.Functionalcomponent of the form and function of New Zealand plants.History of thevegetation of New Zealand.Demographic processes characteristic of thevegetation of New Zealand.Current environmental influences on thevegetation of New Zealand.The botanical component of conservation inNew Zealand.
