Safety reviews on selected Indian medicinal plants. Volume 1. 2018. illus.(b/w). XXV, 1423 p. gr8vo. Hardcover.

Indian Systems of Medicine utilize specific part(s) of a medicinal plant for their medicinal values in most of the cases while whole plant has been used only in some cases. Thus, the present volume is the first of this series that comprises safety related information on the specific part(s) of 75 commonly used Medicinal Plants that are popularly used in Indian Systems of Medicine. The process comprised, a relevant literature search from primary, secondary and tertiary sources using various search databases and websites.

The compiled information on each medicinal plant was reviewed by Technical Review Committee that included experts from various disciplines. The compiled monograph on each plant includes synonym and popular names of the plant (Ayurveda, Hindi and English), family of the plant, part of the plant used in Indian Systems of Medicine (particularly Ayurveda), history of medicinal use along with documentation of Sanskrit slokas, pharmacopoeial status, dose, major and bioactive phytoconstituents, pre-clinical and clinical evidences on efficacy and safety including acute, subacute and chronic toxicities, mutagenicity/genotoxicity, reproductive safety, teratogenicity, case reports on toxicity, safety in pregnancy and children (if available), herb-drug interactions, key points and complete references on each aspect of information cited.

The publication will be helpful in identifying the safety related concerns such as toxic dose, target organ(s) for toxicity, chemical(s) possibly routes of exposure on toxicity of the medicinal plant/part(s) particularly used in Indian Systems of Medicine. The publication would also be useful in identifying the potential herb-drug interactions, need gap and scope of further investigation(s) on safety related issues for each plant. The tabular representation of clinical data used only as a single-herb therapy will further help in readily reckoning efficacy as well as safety of the plants.
