Smith, James Edward
English botany; or, coloured figures of British plants, with their essential characters, synonyms, and places of growth. With coloured copper engravings by James Sowerby. 1790 - . As described below.
A very unusual set. Apparently an algae specialist has cut out from the complete work all plates and explanations relating to algae and lichens, and has rebound them in some of the original halfleather covers. So we have 'volumes' 28 to 33 & 36, which do not contain the original contents, but the rebound algae and lichen plates ,including the relevant explanations. The contents in 'volume' 31 have been placed in unbound form in the volume covers, which clearly show that the original text and plates have been cut out. There are in toto 518 coloured copper engravings present. 3 plates show some foxing, else clean.
7 volumes total, plus one fascicle.Stafleu: TL2: 12.221.
