Gramineae or Poaceae is one of the largest family of monocot plants.The important of the grass to human civilization needs little introduction. The origin of the grass family appears to be older than human races. Mostly herbaceous grass-like plants, this family includes several important staple crops (cereals) such as wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, barley, oats, and millet. A monocotyledonous family contains the grasses, which number about 10000 species in about 700 genera through out the World. The present work of "The Grasses flora of West Bengal"composed of total 374 species distributed in 12$ genera, out of which 67 genera and 212 species belong to sub-family Panicoideae and 61 genera and 162 species are under the sub- family Pooideae. The key correctors of genera and species, correct nomenclature, synonyms .flowering & fruiting time, description, uses (wherever available) and distribution in West Bengal are given for all species. We hope that this book will helpful for agrologists in future research work in general and Botany student in particular for the identification of grass species of West Bengal. - Quote from bookcover.
