The word orchid itself conjures up images of something exotic and somewhat mysterious in many people's minds. Species names such as lady's slipper, honey flower and meadow orchid sound like something out of a fairy tale. But these beauties really do exist.

Here we present the 59 species, subspecies and varieties that exist in Sweden today - a plant world where our knowledge is constantly evolving, but also a part of our nature that is now seriously threatened.

The book Sveriges orkidéer (Orchids of Sweden) gives us a unique insight into the amazing world of orchids; the different environments in which orchids grow and why they are found there, when they bloom, how they are structured and how orchids are pollinated.

But it is the combination of Henrik Karlsson's atmospheric photographs and Emma Tinnert's detailed illustrations that makes this book stand out.

Each species is given a double-page spread, with a close-up photograph on the left and an exemplary concise text on the right. There are also Tinnert's excellent watercolours, created with a precision and sense of colour that rivals that of Bo Mossberg.
