McNeill, Ian
The Flora of County Tyrone. 2010. Many col. photogr. & distr. maps. X, 374 p. 4to. Paper bd.
The book represents a major contribution to the understanding of plant distribution in one of Irelands largest counties. The Systematic Section catalogues all vascular plants that occur or have occurred in Co Tyrone. For the rarest plants, specific sites are listed. Distribution maps accompany many of the species accounts. While the Systematic Section lies at the heart of the Flora, there are many ancillary chapters such as the topography botany of Co Tyrone, and the history of Botanical Recording. The book includes notes on the meanings and pronunciation of Tyrone place-names, accompanying an extensive Gazetteer giving grid references for places named in the text. There is also a comprehensive Bibliography. Many photographs of flowers enliven the text. The chapter entitled Habitat Gallery is one of the highlights of the book, the many photographs in this section illustrating the beauty of the Tyrone landscape.
