The Foliicolous Lichnes of Japan. 2000. (Symboae Bot. Upsaliensis, 32:3). illus. 72 p. Paper bd.
A detailed survey of the foliicolous lichens of Japan, mainly based on extensive collections made during 1994 and 1995, is given. A total of 83 regularly foliicolous taxa (including two varieties and two lichenicolous fungi) is now known, many of them restricted to the southern subtropical to tropical islands. Eleven taxa are described as new, viz. Anisomeridium platypodum sp. nov., Byssoloma discordans var. flavescens var. nov., B. subleucoblepharum sp. nov., Fellhaneropsis kurokawana sp. nov., Gyalectidium ciliatum sp. nov., G. radiatum sp. nov., Opegrapha lichenicola sp. nov., Porina cupreola var. nipponica var. nov., P. thujopsicola sp. nov., Strigula bella sp. nov., and Tricharia kashiwadanii sp. nov. Furthermore, the new combinations Byssoloma annuum (Bas.: Bilimbia annua Vain.; = Byssoloma dimerelloides Sipman & Aptroot, = B. clauzadei Kalb & Vëzda) and Eremothecella macrocephala (Bas.: Stirtonia macrocephala R.Sant.) are proposed. Both taxa were previously unknown from Japan. In addition, 52 further species are reported as new to Japan: Arthonia accolens, A. cyanea, A. fuscocyanea, A. trilocularis, Asterothyrium cf. decipiens, Bacidia micrommata, Badimia pallidula, Barubriafuscorubra, Byssolecania hymenocarpa, Byssolecania variabilis, Byssoloma minutissimum, Chroodiscus mirficus, Dimerellaflavicans, Echinoplaca epiphylla, E. leucotrichoides, E. pellicula, Enterographa mazOsiae, E. multiseptata, Eremothecella calamicola, Fellhanera microdiscus, F. rhapidophylli, F. subfuscatula, Gyalectidium caucasicum, G. fihicinum, Gyalidea epiphylla, Lasioloma arachnoideum, Loflammia epiphylla, Microtheliopsis uleana, Musaespora epiphylla, Opegrapha viridistellata med., Porina chrysophora, P. epiphylla, P. leptosperma, P. rujida, P. semecarpi, P. tetramera, P. tnchothelioides, P. aff. triseptata, P. virescens, Semigyalecta paradoxa, Sporopodiumfiavescens, S. lepnieurii, S. phyllochanis, Stnigula concreta, S. inelanobapha, S. nemathora, S. nitidula, S. obducta, S. subelegans, S. subtilissima, Tapellania nigrata, and Trichothelium inarianense. The following 16 genera are also new to Japan: Asterothyrium, Badimia, Barubnia, Byssolecania, Chroodiscus, Echinoplaca, Fellhaneropsis, Gyalectidiüm, Lasioloma, Loflammia, Microtheliopsis, Musaespora, Semigyalecta, Sporopodium, Tapellaria, and Tnichothelium. Lopadium tonkinense Zahlbr. is considered to represent a Calopadia sp. Most of the species exhibit a wide or pantropical distribution. Arthonia accolens, A. fuscocyanea, Byssolo,na minutissimum, Dimerella flavicans and Porina trichothelioides are new to Asia. Included in the survey are also all foliicolous lichen species earlier reported from Japan, and references to place of earlier publication are given. Two earlier reported species are to be corrected, viz. Porina corruscans, which is P. thujopsicola sp. nov., and Strigula nitidula, which is S. concreta. A key to the taxa is presented, and diagnostic features are given for many species, accompanied by notes on their distribution.
